15min Reading Activities

Make 15 minutes go a long way. Try these quick reading activities with your younger kids.

1. License to read. On car trips, make it a game to point out and read license plates, billboards, and interesting road signs.

2. Better than TV. Swap evening TV for a good action story or tale of adventure.

3. Look and listen. Too tired to read aloud? Listen to a book on tape and turn the book's pages with your children. You'll still be reading with them!

4. Labels, labels, labels. Label things in your children's room as they learn to name them. Have fun while they learn that written words are connected to everyday things.

5. Pack a snack, pack a book. Going someplace where there might be a long wait? Bring along a snack and a bag of favorite books.

6. Recipe for reading. The next time you cook with your children, read the recipe with them. Step-by-step instructions, ingredients, and measurements are all part of words in print!

7. Shop and read. Notice and read signs and labels in the supermarket. Back home, putting away groceries is another great time for reading labels.

8. Your long-distance lap. Away on a business trip? Take a few books with you, call home, and have your child curl up by the phone for a good night story.

9. A reading pocket. Slip fun things to read into your pocket to bring home: a comic strip from the paper, a greeting card, or even a fortune cookie from lunch. Create a special, shared moment your child can look forward to every day.

10. A little longer? When your child asks to stay up a little longer, say yes and make it a 15-minute family reading opportunity.

Bonus item! Find more reading ideas from parents like yourself.

8 types of mummies

try my best to translate this article.

1. those who play too much
some mums come back home in the midnight, 1 week see their children 2-3 days; some mums are too addicted to tv dramas, once they are in front of the tv, they will forget everything. they only come back to reality when the tv drama ends. this type of mums can be called 'selfish mothers', the children cannot feel their moms' responsibility and cannot face themselves in the mirror.

2. those who concentrate on dads
although dads are working hard, and the whole family should give him care and concern, but if mums always leave the biggest piece of cake to dad, always buy dad's favourite food, as if dad is the only person in mum's life. the kid will feel jealous and cannot adapt to

TYC: Mental Development (pt1)

Test Your Child (TYC)
courtesy of "Dr Miriam Stoppard, TEST YOUR CHILD OR How to discover and enhance your child's true potential"

Developing general understanding involves many parts coming together. Sight, sound, memory, and motor skills must move forward together for mental growth to proceed.

Many brain and body skills advance on a tide of growth and expansion as general understanding increases. The determining factors are your baby's sociability and personality, and environment you create for him. You can help your child's brain to grow and develop by providing the stimulation as set out in the chart, and it is particularly important for you to do so in the first year of life, and again in the third year, both times when the brain goes through major growth spurts.

No, No, No - Living With A 2yr old

No, No, No - Living With A Two Year Old, by Sarah Veda

If your child is approaching the age of two, your life is about to change dramatically. I know, your life already has changed dramatically, but you’re about to enter a whole new level of, well, frustration and despair. Luckily, the difficulties only last for about two years......sigh. Well, to help you out, let me give you some tips about living with your two year old.

First – you need to understand that toddlers have no impulse control. This is a critical piece of information, and you will need to chant it to yourself several times a day. Even when a toddler knows what she’s doing is wrong, and knows she’s going to get into trouble for it, she can’t help it. She just has to do it. So, don’t think your child is incapable of being trained when she gets into the toilet paper for the tenth time today. The best advice is just put the stuff away. And, don’t punish her too harshly. At this age, making punishment harsher for subsequent offenses isn’t helpful. The same time out routine each time will have more effect, though you must understand me when I say this – nothing except growing older will have much effect on a two year old.

Secondly, if you live with a two year old, don’t try to do anything in a hurry. Gone, at least for a while, are the days when you can “run to the grocery store”. At this age everything takes a long time, and you should just get used to it. Trying to hurry them along only creates frustration for both of you. Let them try to get in and out of the car themselves. Let them pick exactly which grocery cart you’ll use. It’s good for their development and it helps keep peace.

Thirdly, pick your battles. Don’t allow anything that’s unsafe, but don’t try to control how and when everything gets done. If she wants to wear the purple plaid pants with the yellow striped top, some days you just need to let her do it. One way to minimize the battles is to give your child some choices up front, but not too many. For instance, pick out two appropriate outfits for the day, and then let her choose between them.

Finally, enjoy this age. As difficult as two year olds can be (oh, and three year olds can be just as bad), they are also simply magical to watch. They learn something new every day. They’re excited and amazed by the simplest things, like blowing bubbles and getting a sticker. They’re a wonderful combination of baby and child, and they’ll never be this age again. Thank God.

Sarah is a 41 year old wife and mother of two boys and one girl. She spent many years as a manager in the corporate world, and gave it up to be a stay at home mom.

Good Night Song

The Smurfs Goodnight Song Lyrics

Try to sleep now, Close your eyes, Soon the birds will stop singing.
Twinkling stars, Are shining bright, They'll be watching you all night.
All the things, You enjoyed, On this beautiful day
All your friends, All your toys, Will be waiting for you to play.

[italicized words are spoken]
"Mr. Sandman will bring you dreams, As soon as the lights are out, And tomorrow, You must tell me What those dreams were all about"

Try to sleep now, Close your eyes, Try to think of tomorrow.
All those stars, Wish you goodnight, So I'm switching off the light.
One more hug, one more smile, Kiss you once, kiss you twice.
I'll be here for a while, Try to sleep now and close your eyes.
"Goodnight"
